Yeovil and Southport fly non-league flag

FA Cup wins for Conference sides Yeovil and Southport and a loss for Division Two leaders Stoke provided the main shocks in the second round.

Sunday also saw Kingstonian of the Conference drawing 0-0 with Leyton Orient to earn a place in the third round draw.

In Saturday's matches, Northampton could not get to grips with the contours of Yeovil's Huish Park and went down 2-0 after goals from Steve Thompson (14) and Warren Patmore (82).

The day's other Cup fall guys were Mansfield, who have been in good form in Division Three but could not peg back Conference side Southport at Field Mill.

A penalty from David Gamble (25) and a second goal from Brian Ross brought the non-leaguers a 2-1 win.

A single goal from Division Three side Swansea's Richard Appleby four minutes before half-time was enough to ensure an end to Stoke's Wembley dreams.

Fulham, one of Division Two's top dogs, had a fright at home to Hartlepool before confirming the form book with a 4-2 win.

It was 2-2 after 58 minutes, Craig Midgley (41) and then Steve Howard levelling for Hartlepool, before Simon Morgan (81) and Geoff Horsfield (84) - who also scored the Cottagers' opener in the sixth minute - settled the home nerves.

Luton Town were beaten on their home patch by Hull, currently the bottom club in Division Three.

The Hatters must have thought they had weathered the Tigers' storm when Steve Davis struck in the 36th minute to equalise Ben Morley's 29th-minute opener.

But for Luton, denied a Worthington Cup semi-final spot by Sunderland in midweek, it was not to be - and Rob Dewhurst got the winner for Hull with just under half-an-hour to go.

A hat-trick in six second-half minutes from Graeme Tomlinson helped Macclesfield to a 4-1 win at the expense of Cambridge. Lincoln threw off the troubles of bottom spot in Division Two with an similiarly emphatic scoreline at home to Stevenage, killing off the Conference club's hopes of another glorious FA Cup run.

Northern League minnows Bedlington Terriers also came down to earth - at Glanford Park, Scunthorpe - where the hosts beat them 2-0.

Division Three leaders Cardiff were never in danger in a 3-1 win over Conference representatives Hednesford, and in the day's early kick-off Exeter City earned a replay with Bristol Rovers after their 2-2 draw at St James' Park.

Second Division rivals Notts County and Wigan must also try again after a 1-1 draw at Meadow Lane, and Conference pair Doncaster and Rushden & Diamonds will need a replay too following a 0-0 stalemate at Belle Vue.

Rotherham, who needed two matches to get rid of Emley in round one, signed up for another 90 minutes after their goalless draw with Rochdale at Spotland, and it will all start again for Wycombe and Plymouth too thanks to a 1-1 result at Adams Park.

Oldham's John McGinlay and Brentford's Darren Freeman got their eye in from the penalty spot - and the practice may come in handy for both players if next week's return tie ends like the 1-1 at Boundary Park.

Goals from Kurt Nogan (58) and Paul McKenna (69) saw Preston get the better of fellow Division Two promotion chasers Walsall at Deepdale. Wrexham emerged on top in their all-Second Division battle at home to York, who went down 2-1 and finished the match with nine men.

Torquay, second from bottom of Division Three, put up a praiseworthy performance to go down only 1-0 at home to Bournemouth.
