Chilean exiles and human rights protesters are demonstrating outside the Surrey estate where Chile's General Pinochet is staying.

The former dictator is awaiting a decision on whether he faces extradition to Spain to stand trial on charges of torture and murder.

After they failed to gain access to the exclusive Wentworth estate, the protestors stood on the main road outside shouting and waving flags and banners on the main road. They arrived in the early afternoon to conduct a peaceful protest and the police presence was minimal.

Demonstrators have said they will continue to make their voices heard every weekend at the general's temporary home for as long as the general remains there.

The Home Secretary, Jack Straw, is due to make a decision on Friday as to whether or not General Pinochet should be extradited on charges of human rights charges.

Lawyers for the general have asked Mr Straw to allow General Pinochet to return home on compassionate grounds.

Mr Straw has also been considering submissions from the Chilean authorities, who want the former dictator to return home, and Spanish authorities, who want him extradited for trial on charges of human rights abuses.

He has also been looking at submissions from human rights groups including Amnesty International.

General Pinochet is due to make his first public appearance since his arrest in October at a bail hearing at Bow Street magistrates' court in central London on Friday.
