A 10-year-old girl remains seriously ill in hospital after an attack in which her six-year-old sister died.

Louise Gilmour underwent surgery after suffering head injuries at her home.

Her condition is said to have improved slightly at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

Erin Gilmour was found dead at the family flat in Union Street, Stonehouse, South Lanarkshire.

The girls' mother - who had been undergoing tests at a hospital in Wishaw - has been transferred to a psychiatric unit in Shotts.

Police are still waiting to interview the 36-year-old woman, who has not been named.

A spokesman for the Strathclyde force said officers were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

An investigation was launched after police were called to the house at 1750 BST on Thursday.

Both girls were believed to have been attacked with a hammer.

'A good friend'

Flowers, toys and notes of affection have been left at the gates of the house following the incident.

One of the cards at the fence said: "Erin, you are the bestest friend ever. I will miss you."

Another message read: "Erin, you are so cute and so tiny, you are a good friend."

Someone else wrote: "Wee Erin, a little light has went out of our lives and now lights up heaven."
