Swedes in seventh heaven

Sweden celebrate victory at the Assago Forum

Ian Carter reports (BBC Radio 5 Live)
Defending champions Sweden have won their seventh Davis Cup title by taking an unbeatable lead over Italy in Milan.

Jonas Bjorkmann and Nicklas Kulti sealed Sweden's victory by beating the makeshift Italian doubles pairing of Diego Nargiso and Davide Sanguinetti 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 6-3.

The doubles victory gave the Swedes an unassailable 3-0 lead over Italy in the best-of-five final.

"This one isn't nicer, it's just different. We never get satisfied with winning. It's a nice feeling and we want it more and more," said coach Carl-Axel Hogeskog.

Magnus Norman had set the Swedes on the road to their third title in the last five years by beating Andrea Gaudenzi in the first singles match on Friday.

The Italian retired with a torn shoulder tendon at 6-6 in the fifth set and Magnus Gustafsson then increased the home side's dismay by outplaying Sanguinetti 6-1 6-4 6-0 in the second singles rubber.

"Andrea's injury made all our plans go up in smoke," said Italian coach Paolo Bertolucci.

The start of the doubles was played in near silence despite a 12,000 crowd but the Italian fans turned on their own team as the match wore on as Nargiso and Sanguinetti made an increasing number of unforced errors.

They almost collided in the second set as both went for a lob and things turned even more sour for Sanguinetti when his wallet and mobile phone were stolen from his bag in the post-match confusion at courtside.

Italy won only 16 points in the final two setsand Bjorkman said: "We moved up a level in the tiebreaker and were in control from there. We were always a step ahead of them."

Sweden has now captured the Davis Cup seven times, including a record six since the World Group format was established in 1981.
