Dancing disgust in Tunbridge Wells
Pole dancing
A decision on the club will be made next month
A row has broken out over plans to open a lap dancing club in Tunbridge Wells.

Businessman Des Leigh has asked for permission to start a members only, topless pole dancing venue.

Local residents believe it will ruin the wealthy, middle-class image of the town.

Mr Leigh, however, has claimed that the people Tunbridge 'badly want' to see his venture succeed.

We don't want sexually aroused men turning out on to the streets

Reverend John Banner

If the application is successful, the club would be situated in a basement in Church Street.

Local vicar, the Reverend John Banner, said: "This would simply not fit in with the ethos of the town.

"These clubs are degrading to women.

"People in London, inner Birmingham or Manchester expect these sorts of venues, but not here in Tunbridge Wells.

"We don't want sexually aroused men turning out on to the streets after visiting this club which appeals to the lowest nature of men."

Men love to see beautiful women dancing with their kit off

Des Leigh, businessman

Mr Leigh, from Mayfield, East Sussex, believes the club will be a good addition to the town's nightlife.

He said: "Men love to see beautiful women dancing with their kit off.

"They want it bad. They want to spend their money on this."

'No touching'

If councillors approve the bid, auditions will start for dancers at the town's Wellington Hotel.

Mr Leigh said: "I want local, knock-out girls and former dancers.

"It will be a members only establishment with a no-touching rule."

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is due to debate the application on 23 October.
