Bosnich undergoes surgery

Bosnich - out of action until the New Year

Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has undergone keyhole surgery in a bid to cure a shoulder problem which has kept him out of action since early October.

The operation was carried out in London by surgeon Ian Bayley, who has performed similar surgery on British javelin throwers Steve Backley and Mick Hill in the past.

Bosnich saw a fourth specialist in midweek and it was then decided to go ahead with the operation which is expected to sideline him until the New Year.

Villa manager John Gregory has already admitted that the Australian, who is set to leave Villa on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling in the summer, has a "deep-rooted problem."

He was urging the former Manchester United player to play through the pain barrier but there has been no improvement in his condition.

Former England Under-21 keeper Michael Oakes has deputised but Gregory admits that Villa have missed Bosnich's presence and command of his penalty area.
