The new prime minister of Guinea Bissau, Francisco Fadul, is reported to have called for the president, Nino Vieira, to be put on trial.

Portuguese radio Renascenca quoted Mr Fadul as saying that the president was guilty of murder, beatings, defamation and the humiliation of leading figures.

Mr Fadul was appointed on Thursday to head a government of national unity.

He previously served as a political adviser to the chief of staff, General Ansumane Mane, the man whose dismissal led to a five-month army mutiny.

General Mane and President Vieira signed a peace accord last month.
