Lucky 13 for dominant Scots

Kenny Logan scores one of his five tries

Scotland 85-3 Spain

Scotland made easy work of Spain as they romped to another 13-try victory at Murrayfield.

Bill McLaren reports (BBC Radio 5 Live)
Winger Kenny Logan grabbed five scores as Jim Telfer's troops matched their points tally from their opening World Cup qualifier against Portugal last weekend.

"You can only play the opposition put in front of you and it was a fairly workmanlike job. Spain were a bit better than Portugal and stuck in quite well but compared to last week, we kept the game plan working right to the end," said Telfer.

Tries from Logan, brothers John and Martin Leslie, Tom Smith, Bryan Redpath and Gregor Townsend before half-time put the Scots well in command with a 40-3 advantage at the interval.

But there was no let-up after the break with Cammy Murray, Doddie Weir and replacement Shaun Longstaff all scoring in addition to Logan's four second-half runs to the line.

Stand-off Duncan Hodge converted 10 of his 13 kicks at goal - the same ratio as he managed against Portugal - to keep the scoreboard ticking.

After the encouraging displays in both defeat, to the Springboks, and victory - in last week's 85-11 demolition of Portugal - Telfer was looking for further evidence that his side have finally turned the corner after a wretched series of defeats.

First after three minutes

And just as against Portugal seven days ago, Scotland didn't have long to wait for their first score.

A tap penalty move in the third minute was fed through Hodge and Jamie Mayer on its way to Logan, who cut inside off his left wing through some weak Spanish tackling to score.

Hodge added the extra points from the touchline and was on target again after 10 minutes following Scotland's second try.

Spain responded with a penalty from stand-off Andrei Kovalenko after the Scots had fallen offside in front of their own posts.

But the home side replied instantly with a well-worked third try, Townsend making his presence felt down the right flank, Eric Peters continuing the move and Martin Leslie providing the finish.

Hodge kept up his perfect record with the boot to give the Scots a 21-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Scotland prop Tom Smith grabbed a popular fourth try just before the half-hour.

A powerful surge by a dominant home pack saw Mather driving the British Lion over from close range, Hodge this time narrowly off target with his conversion attempt.

He made no mistake after 33 minutes, however, after captain Bryan Redpath, sniping close to the Spanish line, scuttled in for try number five.

Townsend then rounded off a highly-successful first period for the Scots with a sixth try created by John Leslie's superb running and handling skills, Hodge again adding the extra points.

Swift start in second half

The second half was barely 90 seconds old when Logan grabbed a fine individual try, his second of the afternoon.

Taking a pass on halfway on the left touchline he breezed past the first Spanish defender before rounding replacement wing Rafael Bastide and accelerating away to the corner.

Hodge again converted from the touchline before Townsend gifted the Wasps flyer his hat-trick after 50 minutes, using his pace to great effect before drawing the last line of defence.

After notching his eighth successful kick from nine attempts, Hodge's superb half-break then sent right winger Cammy Murray streaking 50m down the opposite flank for the ninth try, Hodge converting for a 61-3 lead going into the final quarter.

Lock Doddie Weir then bundled his way over to bring the try tally into double figures before Logan grabbed his fourth.

Replacement Alan Tait, on for Mayer, sent him racing away to the same spot with six minutes left before Townsend unselfishly allowed another replacement, Longstaff, to complete the scoring.
