Euell sinks Sky Blues

Noel Whelan outpaces Wimbledon defender Chris Perry

Wimbledon 2-1 Coventry

The Dons followed up their Worthington Cup qrater-final success against Chelsea with three valuable points thanks to a double strike from Jason Euell.

Steve Tongue reports (BBC Radio 5 Live)
It looked as if Coventry might leave Selhurst Park with a win under their belt as the home side looked lethargic for much of the game.

Gary McAllister put them ahead with a penalty early in the second half but the goal shocked the hosts into action and they hit back with typical gusto.

Euell, pushed up front at half-time by Kinnear in place of Marcus Gayle, did the damage in front of goal as Coventry suffered only their second defeat in eight visits to Wimbledon.

Coventry came closest to scoring in the opening 45 minutes when Roland Nilsson's cross caused panic in the home defence and Darren Huckerby shot from eight yards but Neil Sullivan thrust up an arm to block his effort.

The rebound fell to McAllister, who miscued but Steve Froggatt turned the loose ball over the line, only to be flagged offside.

Euell showed great skill on the edge of the area to bring down a difficult ball with his head, take a touch on his chest before firing a volley which Swedish keeper Magnus Hedman managed to save.

But the game had desperately needed a goal to bring it to life and it came nine minutes after the break thanks largely to Huckerby's pace.

The Coventry striker collected a long ball from defence, swept past marker Dean Blackwell, and charged into the box where his run was clumsily halted by Chris Perry.

Referee Steve Dunn pointed to the spot and McAllister sent Neil Sullivan the wrong way. The goal brought the game to life as Joe Kinnear's men finally found their fighting spirit.

Neal Ardley and Perry both went close but it was Euell who struck to level the scores 19 minutes from time.

He was given time and space to control Ben Thatcher's pass and rifle home from eight yards for his fifth goal of the season.

The Dons and drove forward powerfully but had to wait until seven minutes from time for the winner when Euell cut inside Paul Williams and hammered the ball home.
