Leicester outfox troubled Saints

Leicester 2-0 Southampton

Struggling Southampton were hit twice in two minutes as Leicester strolled to a 2-0 win at Filbert Street.

David Oates reports (BBC Radio 5 Live)
The Saints appeared to have pulled through a poor first half but were outplayed by the home side after the break.

Goals from Emile Heskey and Steve Walsh in the 61st and 63rd minutes secured the well-deserved victory for Leicester.

But a lack of penetration by the makeshift strikeforce of Heskey and Matt Elliott, who was replacing the injured Tony Cottee, meant the Foxes remained toothless.

As Southampton argued over a refereeing decision just after the hour, Heskey took advantage of a great ball by Neil Lennon to fire home.

And then just two minutes later, an error by Southampton goalkeeper Paul Jones allowed Walsh to register his first of the season.

But Leicester can point to some poor finishing as a reason for their inability to break the deadlock in the first 45 minutes.

Heskey should have done better after just three minutes when he powered a header wide of Jones' goal from Steve Guppy's perfect cross.

And the home fans were left empty-handed after a penalty appeal following a Scott Hiley clearance in the 17th minute.

Nine minutes later Lennon forced a great save from Jones when he completed a neat triangular passing move involving himself, Izzet and Elliott with a powerful 18-yard drive.

Southampton appeared to have weathered the storm but were hit by a Leicester blitz just after the hour.

Southampton's Matt Le Tissier squandered a chance to score in the 73rd minute.

Ostenstad put over a great ball to the unmarked Southampton man. He teed the ball up brilliantly - and promptly blasted over from only six yards.

But it was all plain sailing for Leicester who continued to look for another goal and could have had it six minutes from time but Elliott's header went over the bar.

Leicester: Keller, Impey, Ullathorne, Sinclair, Elliott, Walsh, Izzet, Lennon, Zagorakis, Heskey, Guppy. Subs: Arphexad, Taggart, Parker, Savage, Fenton.

Southampton: Jones, Dodd, Hiley, Benali, Lundekvam, Oakley, Palmer, Ripley, Le Tissier, Ostenstad, Hughes. Subs: Moss, Beattie, Kachloul, Bridge, Monkou.

Referee: D Gallagher (Banbury)
