Relieved Rovers boost new boss Kidd

Graham Poll calls for calm in the Blackburn dug-out

Blackburn 1-0 Charlton

It was a case of 'Hail the conquering hero' at Ewood Park as Brian Kidd's first appearance on the touchline since becoming Blackburn's new manager coincided with a much-needed win.

Costly summer signing Kevin Davies broke his duck for the club with a 75th minute strike to secure only their third Premier League victory of the season.

Jimmy Armfield reports (BBC Radio 5 Live)
Kidd does not officially take over from caretaker boss Tony Parkes until next week but left the players in no doubt as to who is in charge as he repeatedly leapt from his seat to yell instructions.

His commitment made an immediate impression on the Rovers fans but referee Graham Poll eventually felt it necessary to have a word with Kidd about his noisy interjections.

"I can't remember the last time I was as hoarse. You could see from the start there were things wrong, and I was just trying to get some shape into the side," said Kidd.

Blackburn had third-choice Alan Fettis in goal with Tim Flowers and John Filan ruled out, but Billy McKinlay returned in midfield for his first game since the end of October after recovering from a groin injury.

John Robinson made his 200th league appearance for the visitors but they almost fell behind early on when Kevin Gallacher narrowly failed to convert Damien Johnson's curling ball at full stretch.

Nathan Blake tested Charlton 'keeper Sasa Ilic with a close range header, but the Londoners responded with a free-kick from Paul Mortimer which brought Fettis into the action.

Midfielder Neil Redfearn was the first man to be shown the yellow card for a foul on Johnson just moments before finding himself clean through on goal, only to shoot wastefully wide.

Gallacher found the net after 26 minutes but a close offside decision went against Rovers and the Scot was replaced by Kevin Davies before the interval after suffering a knock.

The influential Johnson robbed Eddie Youds to set up an opportunity for Blake, but the ball became stuck between his feet and Charlton cleared the danger.

Charlton almost silenced the crowd with a 50th minute free-kick which saw Mark Kinsella tee up Redfearn for a 20-yard strike which a relieved Fettis palmed over the crossbar.

Kidd looked uncomfortable in an expensive-looking overcoat and swapped it for a more casual garment during the interval.

But he was out of his seat again when £7.25m striker Davies drove home from 20 yards after a strong run by David Dunn unsettled the Charlton defence.

Brian Kidd: Results are the most important thing now
"I told young Kevin before the game not to worry about the fee because it is not his problem. I said to him to go out there and enjoy his football. He's a young lad and he wouldn't be human if he didn't think about it," said Kidd.

Davies sliced horribly wide four minutes later and Charlton almost snatched an equaliser at the death but Fettis dived on Andy Hunt's close range header and the relieved home fans were able to celebrate three points.

Blackburn: Fettis, Davidson, Henchoz, Gallacher, Duff, Blake, McKinlay, Johnson, Croft, Dailly, Dunn. Subs: Davies, Broomes, Marcolin, Taylor, Williams.

Charlton: Ilic, Mills, Powell, Redfearn, Rufus, Youds, Kinsella, Hunt, Mendonca, Robinson, Mortimer. Subs: Newton, Jones, Barness, Tiler, Royce. Referee: G Poll (Tring)
