'Quality rubbish' turned into art
Nyamu turns scrap metal into sculpture
A Kenyan artist is spending a month teaching English pupils how to change rubbish into art.
Wanjohi Nyamu, a sculptor from Nairobi, uses scrap metal and other bits of material to build recycled artwork. Nyamu takes old fire extinguishers, bits of old cars and other bits of metal and turns it into art. "I use scrap metal because it's one way of recycling and it's also good for the environment," he told BBC News. Kenyan culture He is spending a month at Oakham School in Rutland teaching pupils a different way of producing art. In Nairobi, Nyamu usually has to hunt for materials on the side of the road, but in England he is surprised by the quality of rubbish that is thrown away. Joe Spence, head teacher at Oakham School, says: "Having Wanjohi with us fantastic for staff and children alike. "It's not just what he's brought to us in terms of having an artist working with us, but the whole culture and experience of coming from Kenya." |
