Saturday, December 5, 1998 Published at 00:11 GMT World: Americas US welcomes new EU defence accord The United States has welcomed yesterday's Friday agreement by Britain and France to work to give the European Union an independent defence force. The State Department said it supported moves by European countries to take more responsibility for their own defence. But a spokesman James Foley made clear Washington would expect any new arrangements to respect the current central role played by the NATO alliance. The accord envisages EU countries being able to deploy their forces outside their territories in situations that did not involve NATO. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
