Indonesian economy 'stagnant until 2000'

The World Trade Organisation says Indonesia, which has been hit severely by the Asian financial crisis, could return to economic growth by the year 2000.

However, in its review of Indonesia's trade policy, the WTO says much will depend on whether the country ends subsidies, tax incentives and trading privileges which have distorted its competitiveness.

According to the report, living standards are unlikely to improve before the early years of the next century.
