Warning over 'lethal' vodka
Bottle of vodka
The Valkonov vodka is not a recognised brand
A woman is seriously ill in hospital after suffering methanol poisoning from vodka.

Greater Manchester Police have issued a warning over the Valkonov vodka, bought from a shop in Gorton.

The rest of the stock was seized and an investigation is underway as to how the chemical got into the drink.

The 33-year-old woman was admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary after suffering severe abdominal pains.

The vodka was priced at £6.50 for a litre bottle from a convenience store.

It is a drink which could have lethal consequences

Detective Sergeant John Jeffrey

Police are warning that the effects of methanol poisoning may be delayed for a few hours.

Classic symptoms include severe stomach pain, drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision leading to blindness.

Detective Sergeant John Jeffrey said: "We are asking anyone who bought this vodka to take it to the nearest police station.

"It is a drink which could have lethal consequences if the person who has drunk it does not receive medical attention."

Police are also urging anyone who knows other places where the vodka is being sold, to contact them.
