Father jailed for killing baby

A father who shook his baby daughter to death has been jailed for three years.

Lee Hendry, 24, of Wasdale Avenue, Breightmet, Bolton, admitted the manslaughter of three-week-old Candice.

A post-mortem examination revealed Candice had suffered head injuries when she was cared for by her father.

Detective Chief Inspector David Law, of Greater Manchester Police, said the child had died because Hendry "could not cope with looking after her for an hour".

Babies 'fragile'

The baby was taken to hospital on 3 May, and died three days later in Pendlebury Children's Hospital, Manchester.

Hendry was sentenced to jail after a hearing at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday. He had pleaded guilty to manslaughter at a hearing in May.

Det Chief Insp Law added: "Candice died because her father could not cope with looking after her for just one hour.

"It is estimated that, in the UK each year, 200 babies die or are seriously injured as a result of being shaken in anger or frustration by a parent or carer.

"My message is simple. Babies are fragile. Never, ever shake a baby."
