Protests in India water row
A protest march over water rights in the southern Indian city of Bangalore has been marred by violence.

Demonstrators, led by the regional film star, Rajkumar, gathered in Karnataka's state capital to protest against the central government's demand that Karnataka release 0.8 billion cubic feet of water daily from the disputed Cauvery river to the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

Police say some demonstrators threw stones at shops and cars, but no injuries were reported.

The protestors delivered a letter to the Karnataka chief minister, SM Krishna, urging him not to bend to central government pressure on the issue.

Mr Krishna has so far refused to give any assurances that his government will implement the order to release water.
