Friday, December 4, 1998 Published at 09:35 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Film protest in South Korea Hundreds of South Korean actors and film makers have taken to the streets of the capital, Seoul, to protest against the United States' pressure on the country to abolish its screen quota system. Under the system, South Korean cimemas are required to show local films on more than a-hundred-and-forty days a-year. Washington pressed for the scrapping of the quotas during recent talks on removing obstacles to investment between America and South Korea. The protesters said abolishing the system would kill domestic film production because it would be almost impossible to find cinemas to show Korean movies. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
