Thursday, December 3, 1998 Published at 16:02 GMT World: Asia-Pacific 'I respected him as leader' ![]() Anwar - trial has now run for 18 days The ex-driver of Malaysia's sacked former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been explaining why he took five years to make accusations against his boss.
"I respected him as a leader," Mr Azizan said in his second day of testimony. His sworn confession was sent to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in August last year together with a letter written by Ummi Hafilda Ali, the sister of Mr Anwar's then private secretary.
Asked by defence lawyers why he suddenly decided to make accusations against Mr Anwar, the witness said: "I decided to come out with this accusation after five years because she (Ummi) stirred my awareness of the despicable acts carried out on me." In her letter to the prime minister, Ummi alleged Anwar was also having an illicit affair with her sister-in-law. Prosecutors say that Ummi Hafilda Ali and Mr Azizan retracted their accusations after Mr Anwar used his powers to intimidate them. Mr Anwar denies 10 counts of sodomy and corruption - charges which he claims are politically motivated. Defence protest over office raid Defence lawyers earlier complained of harassment after police raided one of their offices. The raid on Wednesday followed a report by the prosecution that a document in the case had gone missing - although they say they made no accusation against the defence. In court, the chief defence counsel Raja Aziz called for action to protect the defence team from such tactics. But the judge said he had no power to halt police investigations. Earlier this week, two defence lawyers accused state prosecutors of trying to fabricate evidence against Mr Anwar.
One of the defence team escaped punishment by apologising; the other is appealing against a three-month jail term imposed by the judge.
