Prosecutor to step down in Guatemalan bishop murder case

The public prosecutor's office in Guatemala says it has not yet accepted the resignation of one of its officials, Otto Ardon, who has been investigating the high-profile killing of Bishop Juan Gerardi last April.

Mr Ardon offered to resign, citing personal reasons.

He will continue working on the case until December 15th, when a final decision is made.

Bishop Gerardi, who had just presented a report accusing the army of many abuses committed during the civil war, was found bludgeoned to death.

Mr Ardon and his team insisted it was not a political crime and arrested a priest for his murder.

Human rights and church groups says the prosecutor has carried out a biased investigation.
