Iain Duncan-Smith entered parliament in 1992 and rose quickly to the shadow cabinet. Back in 1987 he contested the Bradford West seat but is now the MP for Norman Tebbit's former seat, Chingford and Woodford Green, in East London. He is right-wing and independent-minded - one of the 26 Conservative MPs who voted against the Maastricht treaty. He calls himself a "Euro-realist", believing it is in Britain's economic interests to remain a partner in Europe but keeping British sovereignty. He is an active pamphleteer for the Thatcherite No Turning Back group. Mr Duncan-Smith is a Group Captain's son and a Scots Guards officer who served in Northern Ireland. He later worked in industry (GEC/Marconi) and publishing. He was voted 1992 "New member of the Year" and is seen as a possible future contender to William Hague.
