Fourteen killed in Algeria bomb blast

At least 14 people have been killed and more than 20 wounded in a bomb explosion in Algeria.

The bomb went off at a market in Khemis Miliana, some 130 kilometres from the capital, Algiers.

There was no warning.

The BBC North Africa correspondent says that the explosion comes as a reminder that political violence in Algeria - although much reduced compared to previous years - is far from over.

She says that, as usual with such attacks, the timing and location were chosen with the intention of causing maximum damage.

More than eighty-thousand people have been killed in political violence in Algeria since 1992, when the Algerian army cancelled elections which Islamic candidates were poised to win.
