Thursday, December 3, 1998 Published at 09:40 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Japanese economy shrinks again The Japanese economy has contracted for the fourth consecutive quarter amid rising unemployment and further falls in consumer spending. Economic output shrank by point seven per cent in the three months to September confirming that Japan is enduring its worst recession on record. The Economic Planning Agency said conditions remained very severe although there were signs of some benefits from an economic stimulus package announced in April.
