Thursday, December 3, 1998 Published at 08:29 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Philippine babies die in fire A fire at an orphanage in the Philippines has killed at least twenty-eightpeople. Most of the victims were young children and babies who were asleep when the fire broke out. The charred bodies of some of the children were found in a storeroom where they had apparently run in an attempt to avoid the blaze. Survivors said many people died because exits to the building were locked. Early reports said faulty wiring appeared to be the cause, but police said they would conduct a full investigation. It's the worst fire disaster in the Philippines since 1966, when a blaze in a disco killed more than one-hundred-and-sixty people. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
