Thursday, December 3, 1998 Published at 04:14 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Philippine babies die in fire A fire at an orphanage in the Philippines has killed at least twenty-sixpeople. Most of the victims were children and young babies who were asleep when the fire broke out. The charred bodies of some of the children were found in a storeroom where they had apparently run in an attempt to avoid the blaze. Survivors said many people died because exits to the building were locked. The mayor of Manila, Dito Atienza, said it appeared that faulty wiring was the cause. It's the worst fire disaster in the Philippines since 1966, when a blaze in a disco killed more than one-hundred-and-sixty people. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
