Paraguayan court rules on Oviedo

The Paraguayan Supreme Court has overturned a presidential decree which freed the former army commander, Lino Oviedo, from prison, where he was serving a ten-year sentence for attempting a coup.

The court's decision is another twist in the legal and political wrangling surrounding Mr Oviedo, who was set free in August by President Raul Cubas -- a close political ally.

The Paraguyan Congress argued that the President had acted unconstitutionally and asked the Supreme Court to overturn the decision.

A BBC correspondent in Paraguay says the judicial ruling in theory means Mr Oviedo must go back to jail.

But to complicate matters the issue will now go back to President Cubas for a final decision.
