Nigeria alleges huge Abacha fraud

Nigeria's military government says it's uncovered a two-billion dollar fraud perpetrated by family members of the late military leader, General Sani Abacha.A spokesman for the current head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, said the money had been taken from the national treasury under the pretence of paying debts owed to Russia for the construction of the giant Ajaokuta steel plant The spokesman said two former government ministers had made statements to the police in connection with the investigation.

The BBC correspondent in Nigeria says General Abubakar seems determined to give the impression that gross corruption will no longer be tolerated in Nigeria.
