Wednesday, December 2, 1998 Published at 16:32 GMT World: South Asia Hindu activists stop controversial Indian film Members of the ultra-nationalist Hindu party, Shiv Sena, have forced cinemas in Bombay to stop showing the controversial film "Fire". About two hundred party supporters broke into a theatre where the film was being shown and ordered the viewers to leave, before ransacking the building. The film which has a lesbian relationship as its central theme has been a commercial success in other Indian cities. The Shiv Sena, which is the governing party in the state of Maharashtra, says the film should be banned because it goes againat Indian culture. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
