Nepalese buddhists call for support

Participants at a buddhist conference in Nepal have called for international support to develop a religious site at Lumbini, which is regarded as the birthplace of the Buddha.

The gathering of five hundred scholars and monks was called to promote Lumbini as an international pilgrimage centre.

Delegates discussed the creation of an international buddhist universty and an airport.

A BBC correspondent in Nepal says some foreign organisations have provided support but progress is slow.
