Moorcroft pledges to build for future

Moorcroft (left) has taken over the sport at a difficult time

David Moorcroft has been confirmed as the man who will lead British athletics into the next century.

The former middle distance runner has been appointed chief executive of UK Athletics, the new governing body for the troubled sport.

Last year Moorcroft was given the top job for the British Athletics Federation - but he held the post for just a week before the cash-strapped governing body went into administration.

Since then he has been heading an interim body, UK Athletics 98, set up in the wake of the BAF's demise.

David Hemery had been appointed president of UK Athletics last month.

Moorcroft, who represented Britain at three Olympic Games, pledged to lead athletics towards a brighter future.

"The last 15 months have seen great turbulence within the sport," he said.

"But, in the course of our year long consultation process and an outstanding year of athletic performances, we have hopefully reached a point where we have solid foundations on which to build a fantastic future for the sport.

"There are still many challenges ahead but I think we have the will, the people and the vision to face them with confidence."
