The European Commission says it is taking France to the European Court of Justice for its failure to comply with EU legislation on the hunting and protection of wild birds.

The legislation limits the hunting season so as to prevent wild birds being shot when they are very young, or when they are breeding or migrating.

The Commission said that France had been asked five months ago to respect the EU legislation, but had made no move to comply.
