The inspirational David Ginola scored a wonderful goal as Spurs knocked Manchester United out of the Worthington Cup.

The win was made possible by Chris Armstrong, who scored two headed goals early in the second half following a dreadful first period.

Ginola's goal was necessary to calm Spurs' nerves after former White Hart Lane hero Teddy Sheringham had brought United back into the game.

Spurs will now play Wimbledon in the two-legged semi-final with the north London club at home in the first game.

As ever in this competition, Alex Ferguson's team sheet made interesting reading with Sheringham and Ryan Giggs making their first starts after returning from injury as substitutes at the weekend.

Ronnie Johnsen was also in the line up as were Nicky Butt, Ole Gunnar Solksjar, Henning Berg and Phil Neville. But the rest of the United team had a youthful look about it.

Spurs picked a full strength side, although Ian Walker returned in goal and Colin Calderwood was back from suspension.

The first half was poor with only Solksjaer and Ginola remotely threatening, as too many passes were misplaced.

At half time Spurs boss George Graham brought Ruel Fox on for Calderwood to try to add some life to the match.

Three minutes later the ball was played into the box and Fox flicked it into the path of Armstrong who headed it high past Van Der Gouw from 10 yards.

Before long it was two. Armstrong scoring again with his head, this time at the near post after a super cross from Ginola on the left.

The former Crystal Palace striker had a hat trick chance on 61 minutes, with Stephen Carr supplying the cross this time. But Armstrong's header went wide.

Butt then had United's best chance so far, but with only Walker to beat, he skied a shot over the bar.

Sheringham scores

Steffen Iversen missed a glorious chance for Spurs, one they almost had reason to regret.

Sheringham then scored against his former club, directing a header across Walker into the corner after Neville's left wing cross.

Alex Ferguson then sent on another attacking option, but in keeping with his selection it was a youngster Alex Notman.

He set up a repeat chance for Sheringham but this time the England striker headed straight at Walker.

The United second string were now looking more dangerous and Spurs looked set for a difficult final quarter of an hour.

That was until a piece of magic from Ginola sealed their semi final place with six minutes to go.

Anderton played the ball to the Frenchman 30 yards from goal. Ginola moved forward and skipped past Giggs before curling a superb shot around Van Der Gouw.

It was a goal fit to win any game - no matter who the opposing manager had decided to select.
