Education is likely to be high on the agenda in this week's Question Time debate.

The government is to put forward plans to solve the teacher recruitment crisis by attracting the brightest graduates into the profession.

Proposed new measures include performance-related pay in England and rewards for good teachers. Another proposal is a fast -track scheme to quickly promote the most promising graduates.

And with the publication of the latest school league tables there is much scope for debate.

The government claims this year's performance tables for England show schools are improving. But many schools complain the statistics do not show socio-economic factors or properly reflect the amount of effort teachers put in.

The National Union of Teachers believes the tables are "fundamentally flawed".

A spokesman said: "Top of the list will be selective schools in leafy glades and at the bottom will be schools attempting to overcome the social problems that beset the communities they serve."

Former deputy Labour leader Roy Hattersley will be on the Question Time panel when it visits Southampton this week. He is known for having strong views on education. He condemns grammar schools, though he went to one himself, and utterly opposes selection interviews for schools. He criticised Tony Blair for sending his children to the grant maintained London Oratory school.
