Uncapped pair lead Scots' charge

New boy Willie Anderson leads the way in training at Murrayfield

Two members of Scotland's supporting cast have been given the chance to take the limelight against Spain on Saturday.

Prop Willie Anderson and flanker Cameron Mather will both make their international debuts in the routine World Cup qualifier at Murrayfield.

Coach Jim Telfer has also made three positional changes to the team that cruised to an 85-11 win over Portugal last week.

Wings Cammy Murray and Kenny Logan switch flanks and Martin Leslie, who made his debut start as blind side flanker against Portugal, moves to open side.

Budge Poutney is demoted to the bench and former captain Rob Wainwright drops out of the squad altogether.

Telfer talks up new boys

Anderson earns his place in the front row, at the expense of David Hilton, following a series of consistent displays for Glasgow Caledonians in Europe.

And New Zealand-born Mather makes the step up after coming close to breaking into the Test team on the summer tour of Australia.

Telfer said: "Willie has been performing very well for Glasgow Caledonians this season and we want to give him a shot at this level to see how he does. Hopefully, this will be a stern test.

"Cammy was with us in Australia and played very well even though he didn't make the Test selection.

"He has been dogged with injuries since he came back but he has done well in his last two or three matches for the Edinburgh Reivers and he is the type of player we are looking for in the back row - a big rangy player with a high work rate."

Telfer is convinced Spain will provide much stiffer opposition for his team than Portugal.

"I think they will be stronger in the forwards and more adventurous in the backs," he added.

"Recent history suggests Portugal have got closer to Spain but I expect them to provide a greater test than we faced on Saturday."
