Civilian court convicts Peruvian soldiers

In a rare ruling, a civilian court in Peru has tried and convicted nine soldiers of murder.

The men were found guilty of torturing and killing two teachers in a remote Andean town in April this year.

The attackers then tried to disguise the double murder by presenting it as an ambush and planting documents on the victims to make them look like terrorists.

The soldiers have been sentenced to between five and eighteen years in prison.

Until recently, military courts dealt with all accusations against members of the armed forces.
