Police in Turkey have launched an investigation into an explosion in a busy shopping street in the south-eastern town of Lice in the Diyarbakir province in which one woman died and eight passers-by were wounded.

The cause of the explosion is not known, but Turkish officials suspect of a possible suicide bombing by Kurdish rebels.

Female Kurdish militants have in the past carried out suicide bomb attacks in southeastern Turkey.
