Sheringham aims to halt Spurs run

Sheringham needs to make his mark against his old club

Teddy Sheringham is likely to get the chance to relaunch his Manchester United career in their Worthington Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night.

His return from injury will be against former club Tottenham, whose manager George Graham is hoping to repeat his success in this competition in his first season at Arsenal.

Sheringham needs a good performance to persuade manager Alex Ferguson that he can break into the line up ahead of either Dwight Yorke or Andy Cole.

The England striker has started just two Champions League games this season, missing a large chunk of the campaign with damaged knee ligaments.

Sheringham - like Ryan Giggs - returned from injury as a substitute at the weekend and the Welshman may also start at White Hart Lane.

Norwegian duo Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who rejected a move to Spurs in August, and Henning Berg are also expected to figure.

Ronny Johnsen, who has missed United's last five games with an ankle injury, could also be fit enough to play, but the rest of the line up will be made up of United youngsters.

George Graham is sure to pick a first team line up as he aims to repeat history in north London.

His first season at Arsenal saw a win in the League Cup and Graham would like nothing better than another Wembley trip as he makes his mark on Tottenham.

He has previously been involved in seven finals of the competition since playing for Aston Villa in 1963, losing four and winning with Chelsea in 1965 and Arsenal in 1987 and 1993.

"Winning the trophy in my first season as Arsenal manager really sparked things off there," said Graham.

"t would be great if a similar thing could happen with Tottenham, especially it still carries the reward of a European place for the winners."

Graham is short of defenders for the match with Justin Edinburgh out for two more weeks, and John Scales and Ramon Vega having only outside chances of returning to the side.

Colin Calderwood is back after suspension but 19-year-old Luke Young may play again after an impressive debut at the weekend.

And there are problems at the other end of the field too - Les Ferdinand is still ruled out and Steffen Iversen needs a late fitness test.
