Talking Point

Is the British press xenophobic?

Talking Point joins with BBC World Service Radio's Europewide to discuss whether the British press are xenophobic

Listen to both sides of the debate click here

Outright hostility to foreigners is taboo in most of Europe's press. But in Britain's popular papers - the tabloids - it is so common it is almost "de rigueur".

Remember the Mirror's "Achtung Surrender", which turned the Euro 96 championship into a soccer war with Germany?

And there was the Sun's recent splash on Oskar Lafontaine, describing the German finance minister as "the most dangerous man in Europe".

So are such stories a symptom of outright xenophobia which could seriously damage relations between Britain and its European partners? Or are they just a harmless bit of fun?
