Rotarians against bullying

Bullying is said to cause on child suicide a month

A CD-ROM designed to help children, parents and teachers tackle bullying is to be distributed free of charge to every school in the UK and Ireland.

The BBC's Alison Holt: "The hope is that they will make a real difference"
Produced by the Rotary Club, which says that every month sees a child commit suicide because of bullying, it shows the different methods used to tackle the problem in five European countries.

The CD-ROM was developed with the help of educational psychologists and anti-bullying experts, along with eight local education authorities, more than 20 schools and several hundred children.

It is divided into sections to cater for different audiences - children above and below the age of 11, parents, teachers and school governors.

Colin Sawyer, a former secondary school teacher who is now a computer consultant, has been the main driving force behind the project.

"Every child has the right to attend school in safety and it is this fundamental belief that has been the inspiration behind the project," he said.

"Even if this new resource can save the life of one of the 12 suicides that occur each year as a result of bullying, then the investment has been worthwhile."

The project is being backed by the former England footballer, Gary Lineker.

It is being funded by local Rotary groups, with the help of an information technology award from the Department for Trade and Industry.
