The President of Germany, Roman Herzog, begins a four-day state visit to Britain today aimed at developing closer relations between the two countries.

The BBC European affairs correspondent says that reconciliation will be a key theme.

He describes Roman Herzog as an outspoken supporter of European integration and that he is likely to urge the British to overcome their doubts about a more tightly-knit European Union.
