Monday, November 30, 1998 Published at 21:52 GMT World: Europe Genocide trial starts at UN War Crimes Tribunal A former Bosnian Serb prison camp guard, Goran Jelisic, has gone on trial for genocide before the United Nations war crimes tribunal in the Hague. The prosecution says that Mr Jelisic boasted about his activities at a Luka detention camp near the northern Bosnian town of Brcko in 1992, and told inmates that he was modelling himself on Adolf Hitler. Goran Jelisic has pleaded guilty to crimes against humanity, and has admitted killing twelve people, but he denies genocide. The prosecutors say he killed at least one hundred people. Psychiatrists say he suffers from a severe personality disorder, but is fit to stand trial. He faces life imprisonment if found guilty. The trial, expected to last several months, is the second for genocide conducted by the UN tribunal. The first ended when the accused, a Bosnian Serb doctor, Milan Kovacevic, died shortly after it began. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
