US defence secretary says he'll help modernise Colombian military


The United States defence minister, William Cohen, says his country will help Colombia modernise its armed forces to assist in the fight against drug production.

Mr Cohen was speaking in the Colombian capital, Bogota, after a meeting with the President Andres Pastrana.

Mr Cohen is now attending a meeting of defence ministers from the Americas to talks about the role of the military in the coming years.
