Dominican Republic murder suspect arrested in New York

The authorities in the Dominican Republic say a man accused of involvement in the murder of a prominent left-wing journalist, Orlando Martinez, in 1975 has been arrested in New York.

They say they'll apply for extradition of the man, named as Mariano Duran Cabrera.

The family and suppoerters of Mr Martinez say they believe he was killed because of his outspoken criticism of the then Dominican president, Joaquin Balaguer.

A total of six people have already been charged with the journalist's murder and their trial is due to re-open next week.

Mr Balaguer could be called to testify.
