Monday, November 30, 1998 Published at 14:59 GMT World: Americas Colombian rebels fear attacks during talks Left-wing rebels from Colombia's largest guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, say the army plans to assassinate one of its commanders and so sabotage peace talks which are just getting underway. Joaquin Gomez, a senior member of the rebels, who are known as the FARC, said he believes the army has dug tunnels in a demilitarized zone in the south of the country set aside for the talks. The rebels are also unhappy that a hundred unarmed soldiers have stayed behind with the government negotiators. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
