Burma alleges mass resignations from opposition

The military government in Burma has announced what it says are mass voluntary resignations from the opposition National League for Democracy NLD.

Burmese state media said four-hundred-and-sixty-seven members of the party quit last Wednesday.

The NLD accuses the Burmese military authorities of pressurising its members to give up political activity.

The leader of the NLD, Aung San Suu Kyi, has appealed for international support for her party's campaign to convene the parliament elected in 1990.

In a videotaped interview with Reuters news agencyshe said her party was not particularly worried that the campaign might prompt tougher action against it, as the NLD had become used to government pressure and persecution.
