Sunday, November 29, 1998 Published at 16:49 GMT Sport: Cricket South Africa set up victory charge ![]() Alan Donald celebrates claiming the prize scalp of Brian Lara South Africa need 164 runs to win the historic first Test against the West Indies, as the match heads to a fascinating climax in Johannesburg. Shaun Pollock was the star of the fourth day, taking four wickets for 49 runs as the tourists collapsed to 170 all out in their second innings. The first ever Test played between the two countries on South African soil has been a productive one for Pollock. In South Africa's first innings the 25-year-old passed 1000 runs in Test matches - and when he dismissed last man Courtney Walsh he had achieved the all-rounder's dream double, with his 100th Test wicket.
And then after Carl Hooper and Ridley Jacobs had steadied the ship with a partnership of 68 in two hours, he returned to mop up the last two wickets. But while West Indies coach Malcolm Marshall was disappointed with his team's batting, he was confident his side could still win after rain brought a premature close to day four. "The pitch is similar to that in Barbados in 1992," said Marshall, referring to the only previous meeting between the two teams. South Africa crashed to 148 all out against the bowling of Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose on that occasion after being set to make 201 to win. Walsh, who broke Marshall's record as West Indies' record wicket taker on Friday, and Ambrose will play a critical role for the West Indies again in the final day's play on Monday. Scorecard West Indies first innings 261; South Africa first innings 268.
