Family hit by new tragedy

A family has been hit by a second tragedy after a man fell to his death from a bridge in Glasgow, at exactly the same place where his brother was killed nearly two months ago.

Police said Andrew McKay, 21, appeared to have overbalanced on a handrail before falling 30ft onto the M8 in Glasgow.

His 17-year-old brother David died after an accident at the same location on 3 October.

Andrew's aunt, Rosanne Fitzpatrick, said: "The family are very shocked by this. Nobody has any idea what happened.

"He was very close to his brother."

She said Andrew was a normal, football-loving boy who worked as a night-watchman.

Andrew died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary soon after the accident, which happened early on Sunday morning.

He had been with two friends on the footbridge in Riddrie between Maxwelton Road and Gala Street, where he lived.

Brother 'grief-stricken'

Family friend John McCrudden spoke of the shock felt in the community, and said he thought Andrew may have been so grief-stricken at his brother's death that he jumped from the bridge.

He said: "Andrew was very close to his brother. I think he did it because he couldn't bear what happened to his brother.

"I knew his dad well. Andrew seemed like a sensible lad, a first-class boy from a first-class family."

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "There would appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
