Algerian newspapers say two people were shot dead when they were stopped at a fake police roadblock in the Ain Defla region west of Algiers.

Islamic extremists often set up checkpoints similar to those of the security forces.

In another incident, a farmer died when a bomb exploded near his home at Bouhamed, also west of Algiers.

Two members of his family were wounded.
