Iranians to pay more for car fuel

President Khatami of Iran has announced an increase in petrol prices for private cars in an effort to raise revenues and curb fuel consumption.

He submitted the measures to parliament as part of an austerity budget.

The President said the increases, which will not affect public transport and domestic heating fuel, were necessary to cut rapidly-rising fuel consumption.

The austerity package comes amid Tehran's continuing financial difficulties, caused by the fall in world oil prices.
