The Swiss are today voting on whether to make hard and soft drugs legal.
Supporters of the initiative say legalisation would be the only way to put an end to the drug trade run by criminals.
But the campaign has not attracted support from any of the main political parties, and a BBC correspondent in Geneva says the proposals are likely to be rejected.
But she adds that if a significant minority backs the changes, the referendum may lead to further relaxation of Swiss drug laws.
The government already offers heroin on prescription to a limited number of addicts, and is expanding the scheme next year.
